Pi Day for Crane Play - Why Circles Matter

Happy Pi Day!!

March 14th. 3/14. Get it?

Pi ( π ) : The remarkable, transcendent (yes, that’s actually a math thing), irrational number that represents the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter.

I’m sure you’ve heard of it.

Did you know that though? Every. Circle. Ever. Its circumference is about 3 times its diameter!!

Good ol’ 3.14159… and on forever.

Crazy stuff.

What you may not have heard about…

Did you know that circles are one of the most important shapes to crane work?

Yeah! We have to have circles to get your lift done right.

I know, you thought triangles are the most important.

That’s right. Triangles are very important because crane work is just a game of leverage.

Your weight is here… it weighs 6 tons. Our crane is here. It weighs 110 tons. How far out is the boom?

Boom. Enter the load chart.

{{ TODO: Diagram }}

But there’s one part we didn’t talk about… how far out is your weight. Yep.

My friends. That is a radius. See! A circle!

The crane is the center. And the boom sweeps out a circle. From where the object started to where it ends.

i.e. think from above

The great thing about mobile cranes is that we can move it and create a new circle if we have to. But for a lot of residential work (so we don’t tear up your yard) and for the most efficient jobs, we would like to stay with just one circle please!

So the next time we are helping you lift… we will be thinking about circles!

We do it in our sleep.

And pi day is a great day for you to be thinking about circles too!!

We are happy to help with all things crane!
