At Patriot Lifting, having the right equipment for the job makes all the difference. Boom trucks play a big role in our day to day work handling everything from roofing materials and HVAC units to light structural lifts.
Right now, we’ve got two boom trucks in the bay, each with its own strengths and setup. While they serve a similar purpose, there are some key differences that impact how they perform on the jobsite.
The Two Boom Trucks
Both of our boom trucks are built to handle a wide range of lifting needs, but the configurations vary in ways that affect setup, stability, and efficiency.
While we are working on getting our original boom truck up and running again we did get a new truck crane. Our newer unit is a 2025 National 30-ton stand-up boom truck mounted on a Peterbilt 567 chassis.
Each has its place depending on the job.
Key Difference #1: Outrigger Design
One of the biggest differences between the two trucks is how they stabilize.
New Boom Truck: Out-and-Down Outriggers
The newer unit features out and down outriggers, which:
Create a wider, more stable footprint
Distribute weight more evenly
Provide better performance on a variety of jobsite conditions
Older Boom Truck: A-Frame Outriggers
The older unit uses A frame outriggers, which are reliable but:
Don’t extend as wide
Can be more limited in certain setups
Require more manual positioning
This difference alone can impact how quickly and efficiently we can get set up on site.
Key Difference #2: Automatic vs. Manual Transmission
Another key difference between the two boom trucks is how they drive.
New Boom Truck: Automatic Transmission
The newer boom truck is an automatic, offering a different driving experience with smoother gear transitions.
Older Boom Truck: Manual Stick Shift
The older boom truck is a manual stick truck, requiring driver controlled shifting and a more hands on driving style.
Both setups are reliable and get the job done it really comes down to preference and how the truck is operated day to day.
Key Difference #3: Front Outrigger
The newer boom truck also includes a front outrigger, which adds another level of stability and when working at certain angles.
This added support helps:
Improve balance during lifts
Allows us to reach over the front of the truck
Expand what the truck can handle safely
Same Goal: Reliable Lifting
Even with their differences, both boom trucks serve the same purpose getting the job done safely and efficiently.
Depending on the project, we choose the equipment that makes the most sense for:
Access
Setup space
Load requirements
Jobsite conditions
Having multiple configurations allows us to stay flexible and meet the needs of each job.
Looking Ahead
We’re always working to improve our fleet and keep our equipment performing at a high level.
Right now, we’re also looking forward to getting our other boom truck back up and running with a cab swap, which will give us even more flexibility moving forward.
Built to Work
At the end of the day, it’s not just about having equipment it’s about having the right setup for the job.
Whether it’s our newer boom truck or our existing unit, Patriot Lifting is equipped to handle a wide range of lifts with reliability and precision.
