Crane lifts switch gear

Some lifts demand more than capacity they demand trust, planning, and complete coordination between operator and crew.

Patriot Lifting was recently called in to lift and place a large piece of electrical switchgear, a critical component used in commercial power systems. The lift required closing off half of the roadway and executing a blind lift over a line of trees, making communication and precision absolutely essential.

Projects like this highlight the level of planning and teamwork required to move sensitive electrical equipment safely.

The Challenge: Limited Space and Obstructed Visibility

Switchgear units are dense, heavy, and extremely sensitive to handling. They must remain level and protected during the entire lift to avoid damaging internal electrical components.

This project presented several challenges:

  • Limited staging space, requiring half of the roadway to be used for crane setup

  • Tree obstruction, forcing the load to travel above the canopy

  • A blind lift, where the operator could not directly see the final placement area

  • The need for precise alignment with the equipment pad

When the operator cannot see the landing zone, communication becomes the most important tool on site.

The Plan: Communication and Coordination

Before the lift began, Patriot Lifting worked closely with the electrical crew to develop a clear lift sequence. Because the operator could not see the final placement point, signal personnel and spotters were positioned to guide every movement.

The preparation included:

  • Verifying switchgear weight and lift points

  • Planning the lift path above the trees

  • Establishing clear hand signals and communication procedures

  • Coordinating traffic control to safely use the roadway

Every step was planned before the load left the ground.

The Lift: Guided by Teamwork

Once the switchgear was rigged, the crane operator began the lift slowly and deliberately. As the equipment rose above the trees, the operator relied entirely on communication from the signal crew to guide the placement.

Throughout the lift:

  • Movements were steady and controlled

  • Spotters provided constant direction

  • The load remained stable and level

  • Adjustments were made gradually and carefully

Even without direct sight of the landing area, the coordination between operator and crew ensured the switchgear was guided safely into place.

The Result: Critical Equipment Installed Safely

The switchgear was successfully lifted over the trees and placed exactly where it needed to be. The electrical contractors were able to continue installation, and the project moved forward without delay.

Blind lifts like this demonstrate the importance of experience, preparation, and communication on the jobsite.
